Dear Mr. Barry Reichmann:
I hope this letter will find you in the best of health, happiness, and
spirit.
Please don’t be surprised that I am writing this letter in English. I have
my secretary here and every word in this letter is dictated by me.
Everything in this letter is the truth.
First of all, I want to introduce you to the city of San Francisco. And I
am not speaking about the “general” San Francisco. I speak about the
Jewish San Francisco. It is the worst Jewish city in the world. Even worse
than Brussels in Belgium. The assimilation and the mixed marriages are
tremendously high. But, on a difficult battleground, they put a great
General.
And now, I am going to introduce to you the General. Rabbi Pinchas Lipner
established a school in San Francisco some 20 years ago with tremendous
difficulties. The reform and conservative fought him relentlessly. But he
and his wife were very strong and they were able to withstand the
tremendous pressure. . . .
And I consider this as a miracle. . . .
[Most] of the students are recent Russian émigrés from places like Moscow,
Kiev, and Leningrad. There is no other such religious institution in San
Francisco which could accept and educate these children. . . .
Rabbi Lipner and his Rebbetzin are idealistic people. They sacrifice a lot
for Torah
education. . . .
I must tell you that I, even with my limited means, help him sometimes.
Now I want to ask you something. He will call you to make an appointment
with you. Please give him an appointment and listen to him. Whether or not
you help him will be your decision. But please give him the appointment.
[Signature translated from Hebrew]: From me who reveres and respects you
in recognition of your great merit,
Chaim Kreiswirth,
Head of Beit Din of Antwerp [Belgium] |
